Telford & Wrekin Banner

Telford & Wrekin Branch of UKIP is the local branch for the Westminster constituencies of Telford and the Wrekin.

The branch is one of the hardest working and most active branches in the country.  Activists from Telford & Wrekin can often be found supporting UKIP events all over the country, whether it's fundraising events, public meetings or just a day of leafleting.

The Chairman of the branch is Denis Allen, a retired RAF officer with many years of experience in local politics.  Denis is a former town and borough councillor, former Mayor of Wellington, former Deputy Mayor of Telford & Wrekin and the UKIP Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Telford.

The Branch Secretary is Councillor Jill Seymour, parish councillor for Kynnersley.

Write to your MP to demand a referendum PDF Print E-mail

The Telford & Wrekin branch of UKIP is urging voters in the borough to write to their MP before it's too late to demand a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU.

MPs are due to vote on a motion triggered by a 100,000 signature petition calling for a referendum on whether the UK should remain a member on current terms, renegotiate its membership of the EU or whether to leave on Monday. The vote was originally scheduled for Thursday but has been brought forward to prevent MPs being pressured into rebelling against their parties by their constituents.

Labour, Lib Dems and Conservative MPs have all been instructed by their leaders to vote against a referendum and David Cameron is actively campaigning against it, even considering the use of a "three line whip", where MPs are threatened with sanctions if they don't ignore their constituents and do what their party wants.

UKIP parish councillor for Brookside, Stuart Parr, said "Nobody under the age of 56 has been allowed to vote on what is now the EU and for David Cameron to suggest (as he did a few weeks ago) that we shouldn't have a referendum now because we had one in 1975 is insulting. We have a democratic right to vote on who runs our country and it's not for career politicians to deny us that right".

Do you believe in big government and a bloated civil service that in some parts of the country accounts for 60% of local employment?

Do you believe that every man, woman and child should be forced to have their DNA and personal details recorded in a massive database linked to countless other databases and sold to private companies on request?

Do you believe that every citizen should be required to produce a plastic card containing their personal details and to prove their identity to tens of thousands of agents of the state, ranging from police officers to dog wardens to neighbourhood watch co-ordinators when instructed to do so?

Do you believe that millions of low paid workers should have to pay income tax and then claim it back in the form of tax credits via an enormously bureaucratic and inefficient system that requires tens of thousands of civil servants and costs tens of millions of pounds to administer?
