Telford & Wrekin Council’s decision to award a £137m, 24 year waste management contract to Veolia defies belief.
Shropshire Council are currently trying to wriggle out of their own “nightmare” 25 year waste management contract with Veolia because they don’t know what their waste management requirements will be in 5 years’ time, let alone 25. You’d think this would serve as a warning to Telford & Wrekin Council but evidently not.
A 24 year contract for something as unpredictable and subject to change as waste management represents extremely poor value for money and ties future administrations into an inflexible contract. Another five elections will have to take place before anyone can make substantial changes to the borough’s waste management arrangements.
