Since it was built, Brookside has been neglected and become run down. Telford & Wrekin Council have recently started efforts to regenerate the centre of the estate with a refurbished and enlarged community centre, new shops and demolition of some of the nearby blocks of flats.
The long-awaited investment in Brookside is very welcome but it should by no means be seen as the end of regeneration in Brookside. We need years of social regeneration, economic growth and physical regeneration in the whole estate. Regenerating the centre of the estate is a fantastic start but the whole estate needs social and physical regeneration.
The physical regeneration of the estate will require considerable amounts of capital expenditure and we would petition the British government for continued funding for a long term regeneration programme. If we are only able to refurbish or replace one block of flats or houses every couple of years, the benefits to Brookside residents and the surrounding area from high quality housing and employment opportunities will be huge.
